In September 2023, Biodiversa+ launched its BiodivNBS call, inviting proposals for three-year research projects to explore the potential of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) in addressing pressing environmental and societal challenges.
Key research themes
Co-funded by the European Commission, the call focused on three critical areas:
- Synergies and trade-offs: Exploring the benefits and drawbacks of NbS in relation to human well-being.
- Mitigating biodiversity loss: Investigating how NbS can address anthropogenic drivers of biodiversity decline.
- Transformative change: Examining the role of NbS in fostering equitable and sustainable societal shifts.
A strong response
The call attracted a remarkable response, with 183 pre-proposals and 108 eligible full proposals received. A rigorous evaluation process, conducted by an independent committee, led to the selection of 34 projects. These projects demonstrate a high level of scientific excellence and address pressing global challenges. They foster interdisciplinary collaboration and engage a diverse range of stakeholders.
This selection represents a substantial investment of over €40 million, including contributions from the European Commission.
We want to congratulate all the successful projects and extend our heartfelt thanks to the Evaluation Committee and its co-chairs, the Call Secretariat, the European Commission, and all the national funders who participate in this call!
