Biodiversa+ aims to contribute to high-end knowledge for deploying Nature-based Solutions for tackling pressing societal issues while improving the status of biodiversity and valuation of biodiversity in the private sector. More specifically it aims at:
- Co-developing R&I activities on Nature-Based Solutions with relevant stakeholders (in particular practitioners, land planners, businesses, local authorities and citizens);
- Reinforcing the knowledge base to make Europe a global leader for the development of Nature-Based Solutions;
- Helping better accounting and valuation of biodiversity in private sectors
- Reinforcing the uptake of Nature-based solutions, as well as approaches/tools/methods to assess both the impact and dependency of business on biodiversity
Nota bene | Nature-based solutions are understood as ‘actions to protect, conserve, restore, sustainably use and manage natural or modified terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems, which address social, economic and environmental challenges effectively and adaptively, while simultaneously providing human well-being, ecosystem services and resilience and biodiversity benefits’ (UNEA/EA.5/Res.5).
Biodiversa+ is co-developing and implementing R&I programme(s) to assess the expected impacts of Nature-based Solutions and facilitate their science-based development and monitoring.
Biodiversa+ promotes the uptake of knowledge from Biodiversa+ funded research projects related to NBS by other sectors and stakeholders. It notably develops success stories on NBS knowledge implementation and development and helps with the operationalisation of knowledge produced within Biodiversa+ in the field.
Biodiversa+ is closely collaborating with European initiatives in the field to make sure the activities on Nature-based solutions are strongly built in collaboration with European R&I NBS initiatives and stakeholders. As such Biodiversa+ is working closely with NetworkNature, the European Platform on NBS and is one of the member of this project.
Biodiversa+ is developing specific Public-Private joint actions, including R&I programmes that involve private stakeholders and tackle their needs. The results from such activities will help promote the uptake of methodologies and metrics for impacts and dependencies of business and biodiversity, as well as develop best practices on how the private sector can be engaged in R&I programming and funding.
All activities will be co-developed with relevant Biodiversity and Business initiatives to better help close the research-implementation gap.
