On the 8th of November 2022 from 9 am to 7 pm CET, EuropaBON – the European biodiversity observation network – is organising its 2022 conference on “shaping the future European biodiversity monitoring framework”. This will be a hybrid event with possibilities to attend on site (in Brussels, Herman Teirlinck building, Havenlaan 88) or online.
Organised in collaboration with Biodiversa+, this conference will be an opportunity to address the challenges and opportunities of integrating biodiversity monitoring information to support public and private policy and decision making in Europe.
For this conference, EuropaBON and Biodiversa+ will bring together multiple stakeholders in biodiversity monitoring and provide an opportunity for them to connect and exchange information with policy makers and decision makers from the public and private sector to jointly understand the challenges and opportunities related to biodiversity information these sectors require in Europe for a sustainable future.
Keynote speakers will provide the latest insights in biodiversity monitoring and particular emphasis will lie on the needs of and opportunities for businesses engaged with biodiversity monitoring data. The potential set-up of a European coordination system of biodiversity monitoring linked to supporting EU and global policies – a Biodiversity Monitoring and Coordination Centre (BMCC) will also be discussed.
Through this collaboration EuropaBON and Biodiversa+ will bring together a wide biodiversity monitoring community. This event will provide the opportunity for a range of stakeholders from academia, policymaking, NGOs, government and the private sector to get updates, meet and exchange, and in particular provide input to the future of biodiversity monitoring in Europe.
Programme:
Morning session: Keynote speeches from the perspective of the European Commission, member states, NGOs, academia and the private sector.
Afternoon sessions: the conference will be split into two parallel meeting streams: one stream will focus on shaping the future European biodiversity monitoring framework, the other will focus on private sector perspectives.
- In the first stream, EuropaBON will present preliminary ideas for a European-wide Biodiversity Monitoring Coordination Centre (BMCC) and invite all participants to discuss them in several smaller focused group sessions. At the end of 2023, EuropaBON will submit a set of proposals for a European-wide biodiversity monitoring framework to the European Commission. This stakeholder conference serves as an initial starting point to discuss these proposals and will allow to consider participants’ feedback in their further development.
- Facilitated by Biodiversa+, the second stream focuses on the use of biodiversity monitoring data in private-sector decision-making. This session will be upon invitation only, and not open for remote participation (closed session). It will aim at discussing the needs of the private sector to use biodiversity monitoring data, exchange best practices and discuss the benefits and opportunities of a pan-European monitoring network.
Participants attending the meeting in person are cordially invited to the cocktail reception on the evening of November 8th.
