“Dialogue on Restoration of Biodiversity, Habitats and Ecosystems”
To inform its support for national restoration efforts, Biodiversa+ held a Dialogue Event on “Restoring Biodiversity, Habitats and Ecosystems,” bringing together 33 researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders. The event focused on identifying knowledge gaps and research needs in biodiversity restoration, and on exploring relevant support activities for Biodiversa+ and the BiodivRestore Knowledge Hub.
Based on a theoretical paper and two key themes (science-based prioritisation and long-term restoration), participants highlighted several crucial needs:
- Inclusive prioritisation approaches integrating social and natural sciences and enabling local integration;
- Incorporation of ecological continuity into restoration criteria;
- Long-term funding and monitoring of restoration projects;
- Harmonised monitoring protocols, synergies with climate monitoring, and multi-scale data collection (local to international);
- Stakeholder engagement at all scales;
- Improved legal guidance and communication for the public, scientists, and practitioners.
The event generated numerous proposals for Biodiversa+ and the BiodivRestore Knowledge Hub, initiating broader consultations for implementing restoration R&I through the Biodiversa+ flagship programme on protection and restoration.
