“Biodiversa+ strategic biodiversity monitoring governance document (Phase 1)”

The European biodiversity monitoring landscape is complex and fragmented, involving multiple actors at various governance levels. To ensure compatibility and accessibility across different sources, a standardised approach to data collection and analysis is necessary. Enhanced coordination and broader access to biodiversity data is also needed to enhance its effectiveness in informing decision-making processes.

This publication provides a first overview of the European biodiversity monitoring landscape, encompassing perspectives from European, national, and sub-national levels. It also synthesizes the key outcomes of Biodiversa+’s biodiversity monitoring efforts during its first year of activity.

Developed in collaboration with EuropaBON, one of Biodiversa+’s key collaborators, the report also incorporates contributions from a range of relevant organizations and initiatives, including the European Environment Agency (EEA), the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), the European Commission’s Directorates-General for Environment (DG ENV) and for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), and a Joint Research Centre (JRC) member. As such, it serves as an important building block in the joint development of a coordinated and multi-scale approach to biodiversity monitoring in Europe.
