“Mapping the collaboration between Europe and Latin America/Caribbean for research on biodiversity”
Both the Latin America/Caribbean (LAC) and Europe regions possess a remarkable diversity of species and ecosystems that are under increasing pressure. To address this challenge, researchers from these regions have been working together to develop effective conservation strategies.
This mapping presents an analysis of scientific publications, revealing a significant increase in collaborative research on biodiversity between Europe and LAC. This collaboration has been particularly fruitful in addressing the impacts of anthropogenic pressures on ecosystems, developing efficient conservation policies, and promoting nature-based solutions.
While there has been progress, the study also highlights disparities within the LAC region. Wealthier countries, such as Brazil and Argentina, have been more actively involved in international collaboration.
To ensure that this collaboration continues to be effective, it is essential to analyse its impact on knowledge generation and academic excellence. Additionally, the involvement of overseas territories linked to Europe in the LAC region can be further strengthened. By addressing these factors, we can enhance regional and international collaboration on biodiversity research and contribute to the conservation of these valuable ecosystems.
