As a partner in NetworkNature, Biodiversa+ has expanded the Nature-based Solutions (NbS) Knowledge Gaps Database. Using a refined screening methodology, this update brings enhanced insights.
What is it for?
In 2021, NetworkNature and Biodiversa+ created this database as a resource for understanding the most pressing knowledge gaps in nature-based solutions (NbS). Drawing on a wide range of scientific and grey literature, as well as institutional publications, it serves as a roadmap for future research and innovation (R&I) to support the wider uptake of NbS.
A fresh perspective
The database has now been extended to include data up to March 2024, covering 619 gaps and capturing the latest developments in NbS R&I. Each knowledge gap is categorised by the type of NbS approach it relates to – such as protection, restoration or ecosystem-based management – and by broad themes such as governance and capacity building.
The update highlights several trends:
- Technical design: Most gaps relate to the technical design of NbS, with fewer gaps in capacity building.
- Ecosystem-based management: Knowledge gaps are mainly related to ecosystem-based management, especially in forest management, while ecosystem protection and restoration receive less attention.
